Publik Wine Fair 2018

Publik Wine Fair 2018

We first met David Cope, co-owner of Publik Wine Bar, in 2014 (he was literally our first interviewee for our blog!). Back then, we were wine babies (and adult babies looking back at the photos) –  just starting to figure out and explore our interest in wine. In retrospect, we couldn’t have come across a better person as our first foray into the world of wine.  David’s warmth and humble approach to wine is what made us realise it doesn’t have to be such a scary, ‘specialist’ subject, and his attitude most definitely invited us to dip our toes into this brave new fermented world a little further.

Fast forward 4 years, and much like our wine journey, Publik has grown too. From its early days as a wine bar that shared a space with Frankie Fenner butchery on the popular Church Street in Cape Town’s bustling CBD, today Publik is a bonafide wine bar (now happily located next to the perpetually popular Power & The Glory on Kloof Nek Road), distributor and wine fair organiser dealing only in artisanal South African wines. In our opinion, what makes Publik a success is that co-owners (David Cope + David Nel) don’t just sell their brand, they ARE their brand. Unassuming, considered and cultured, these two guys are steadfast in their bigger vision and know exactly what they are gunning for, never swaying off the already off-beaten track they’ve chiseled out for themselves. Today, the PUBLIK Wine Bar is an ongoing hive of wine activity, and soon, the distribution warehouse is moving (on up!) from their current location to a more permanent spot in Salt River.

So why are we telling you all of this? Well, for too long, wine consumers have only really been exposed to what they see on most wine shelves in the shops (that includes us too, don’t fret). But no more! If you have even the slightest interest in wine, the PUBLIK Wine Fair is next week Sunday 15 July from 12pm – 5pm where there will be over 20 winemakers exhibiting over 100 of their wines. By putting some of the coolest (we mean, really, there is no other way to say it) wine producers around together in one space, including Alheit, Thistle & Weed, Silwervis, Raised by Wolves, FRAM and even Cope’s own wines, Alphabetical and Full Moon, Publik offers a platform to shine a light onto the smaller players in the industry, providing great exposure for both producer and consumer to finally intersect.

Come taste, chat to the winemakers and meet new people. It’s a Sunday funday after all. So if you’re planning on going to even one wine event this year, make it this. Trust us. Maybe it’ll unlock a door to the world of wine for you – just like it did for us.

Tickets are just R200 and limited to 300 people.
